A banner stretching over 30 meters across Kiliansplatz illustrated global warming and the rise in atmospheric CO2 levels since the Industrial Revolution—an argument against those who deny human-caused global warming. We also took a stand against the resurgent efforts of the nuclear lobby.

The Environmental Union had once again prepared a presentation on the eco-friendly Stirling engine; the ÖDP brought their sustainable “book tractor”; the Rebell performed their own environmental song; the IAC Friends had come with a banner; numerous speeches against the gas-fired power plant, the sewage sludge incineration plant, environmental destruction caused by war, and, of course, protests against the fraud of emissions trading and the greenwashing at the World Climate Conference in Baku—a broad spectrum of views spanning party lines.

During their day trip to Kaltenbronn in the Black Forest, the environmental union members from Heilbronn experienced the raised bog firsthand as a marvelous natural landscape. Everyone enjoyed the tranquility and the lush greenery in the warm rain, and the forest ranger shared many interesting facts about this ecosystem during her guided tour: from the formation of peat and the raised bog lake, to typical tree and plant species, to the bog as a massive CO2 sink, and to the protected forest, which has been left entirely to its own devices for decades.

During the discussion, participants also considered what measures would be effective—in light of global warming—to prevent the bog from drying out. It’s interesting to look back at history: 300 years ago, the forest there was completely cleared for timber; what we see today is the result of reforestation efforts from that time. However, tree species such as spruce are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with climate change today, and with increasing drought, bark beetles have an easy time of it.

Overall, it became clear that forests cannot be saved in isolation through protected forest or reforestation initiatives alone; rather, the interactions within the global biosphere must be taken into account. In short, this was a hiking tour that offered plenty of opportunities to enjoy and understand nature.
